Recovery & Recycling
Turn spent ruthenium-based materials into valuable resources!
VMET specializes in the collection, analysis, and recovery of ruthenium from industrial applications. We buy ruthenium-coated titanium electrodes, catalyst residues, and other secondary sources — offering certified processing and competitive pricing.
Industrial Applications of Ruthenium
Ruthenium plays a critical role in a wide range of industries due to its unique catalytic and electrochemical properties:
Green Hydrogen
Production
Petrochemical
Industry

Pharmaceutical
Where Ruthenium waste Comes From
We recover ruthenium primarily from:
- Spent coated titanium electrodes (MMO/DSA)
- Used industrial catalysts
- Production waste from chemical and plating industries
- Ruthenium-containing electronics or sensor devices
These materials often retain a high percentage of recoverable ruthenium, making them ideal for sustainable recycling.
Why Recycle Ruthenium?
Recycling ruthenium offers strong benefits for both business and the environment:
Economic Advantage
Recover precious metal value and reduce costs.
Environmental Protection
Reduce reliance on mining and limit toxic waste.
Supply Chain Stability
Minimize exposure to market volatility by reclaiming existing metal.
Unlocking Ruthenium’s Full Potential
Ruthenium (Ru), a distinguished member of the platinum-group metals (PGMs), is a remarkable element known for its silvery-grey luster, exceptional hardness, and impressive resistance to high temperatures.
Its unique properties make it indispensable across a wide array of industrial applications, particularly in advanced electronics, as a powerful catalyst, and in various electrochemical processes.
You’ll find ruthenium playing a critical role in strengthening platinum and palladium, creating highly durable electrical contacts that stand up to significant wear. Beyond these established uses, ongoing research continues to uncover new and exciting applications for this versatile metal, including its increasing relevance in semiconductor manufacturing for creating high-performance, small-scale circuitry.
Given its shared attributes—such as its catalytic activity, electronic properties, and robust thermal and chemical resistance—ruthenium is often leveraged alongside other PGMs. What makes ruthenium particularly appealing is its relative abundance compared to some of its PGM counterparts, like iridium. With mine production roughly four times higher than iridium and a historically more favorable price, increasing ruthenium content in designs can be an attractive strategy when there’s flexibility in achieving performance and durability goals.
